Hello Everyone! I’d like to talk about the wonderful experience I had talking & teaching the creative process of my artwork to the art students at Callaway High School in LaGrange GA, south of Atlanta.
Art teacher Clint Robinson invited me to talk to his art students and share some insight about being an artist and to do a demonstration of how I do an Abstract painting. This wonderful opportunity took place this past Tuesday Sept. 22nd. In each of his six art classes, I talked about what it means to me to be a professional artist, how anyone can become an artist as long as they make the decision to learn, and the importance of becoming a professional in any aspect of their lives.
The definition of a professional artist to me is: Someone who has gathered knowledge and developed skills about the craft; someone who has learned the rules & theory; someone who has dedicated time, practice, patience and discipline in learning their subject. It all starts with the decision to learn; not only to learn the basics, but the foundation and essentials to grow in the craft, to keep learning new skills & techniques, while at the same time developing patience & discipline, and to never stop learning. In everything you do, become a professional. This is an invaluable lesson we all should learn. This includes the development of an entrepreneur mind, the ability to be creative and to always Innovate and Re-Invent your self. That is my goal and I encourage anyone to follow this path.
After that, I showed them a slide show of my paintings with a brief description of how each painting was created. Then, the fun begins.
The art teacher would select a few volunteers while the rest of the class gathers around the table where we were painting. The students would choose the color of the paint while I showed them step-by-step how to apply it and how it should be distributed and/or smeared. I explained to them how color theory & the interaction of color takes an important role in the creative process. I also explained how to look for patterns in order to establish a solid composition. In six different classes we created 3 finished paintings.

It was a great opportunity to encourage these growing artists to pursue Art as a profession. I hope I made a difference in their future decisions.
